Meet Sofia From Mexico

Who are you and what do you do in gaming?

My name is Sofia and I’m 25 years old. I’m from Mexico and am a casual player, although I also enjoy to unlock a lot of achievements.

What was the first game you played?

My first time gaming was when I was around eight years old and my first game was Need for Speed 2 on a computer.

What’s your favourite game to play on Xbox and why?

My favourite games to play are the Assassin’s Creed and Forza Horizon series of games because they have beautiful landscapes in huge worlds. Plus the soundtracks are both relaxing and exciting.

What challenges have you experienced being a woman who plays games?

I’ve experienced harassment through messages, where guys can be very insistent on being in a relationship with me, as well as try to flirt with me. I’m usually very kind, but it gets annoying if, from the beginning, I tell them I’m not interested and they continue with the same thing.

Has gaming impacted you in a positive way? If so how?

Yes, they are big part of learning about life. They have helped me to not give up, and to overcome obstacles, even if it seems that it will take some time to overcome them. It also helps distract me from a bad day. Playing games help me stay positive and escape.

What do you think needs to happen for women to feel more empowered and belong in the gaming industry?

Continuing to show diversity particularly with those dedicated to the gaming industry, not only as players but as artists, directors, women who are developing games, hardware, etc. It would be best if people in general gradually change in the way they think.

Is there anything that you’ve done in gaming that you’d like to share? Have you achieved anything special or done anything in the gaming industry that we should know about?

I’ve won some giveaways and received mentions on social networks from groups of players who support me in the goal of increasing my gamerscore.  I’ve also been able to attend last year’s Xbox fanfest (online) and loved living that experience.

Where can we connect with you?
